New England Patriots: Strategy, Storytelling, and Super Bowl DNA
Today was a very special day for me. I have had the privilege of hosting many events for Sportsbusiness.at, but today’s Sportsbusiness Breakfast Club had a very special significance. Guests from Interwetten, the Vienna Vikings, and the New England Patriots ensured that, after almost 30 years, I came full circle.

High-caliber panel discussion with NFL elite
On the initiative of Interwetten, I had the pleasure of welcoming three exciting personalities to a high-caliber panel discussion:
Dieter Grück, Marketing Director at the sports betting platform Interwetten,
Max Paatz, General Manager of the Vienna Vikings,
and Joe Dorant, Senior Director of Global Expansion & Events at the legendary New England Patriots.
The Patriots are one of the most successful and valuable sports organizations in the world. Six Super Bowl victories since 2000 – marked by icons such as Tom Brady and Bill Belichick – have made the “Pats” a global brand.

How do you build a global sports brand?
The discussion focused on the question of how to build an international sports brand and create emotional loyalty among fans – even across large geographical distances. After all, the Patriots play in the USA, but their fan base is spread across the globe.
Joe Dorant provided fascinating insights into the NFL giant’s strategy: strategic partnerships, consistent storytelling, the deliberate creation of emotional experiences, and a deep understanding of its own DNA. It quickly became clear that success in sports is no coincidence – it is the result of a clear stance, a long-term vision, and consistent implementation.

What all this has to do with me
What many people don’t know is that I played high school football in New England myself almost 30 years ago. That’s where my enthusiasm for the Patriots began. In 2013, I had the opportunity to meet Tom Brady in person. And as an NFL photographer, I took a photo of Rob Gronkowski that later made it into the book “The 50 Greatest Players in New England History” – including my name in the photo credits. It was a moment I will never forget.

A real “full circle moment.”
As a longtime Patriots fan, it was very special for me to moderate this panel discussion. Emotions ran high when Joe Dorant presented two original Super Bowl rings—from the fourth and sixth title wins—and also showed a signed jersey from current quarterback Drake Maye.
This morning impressively demonstrated how much sports organizations, sponsors, and leagues can learn from each other—and how powerful real stories are in sports.
Some moments just feel right. For me, yesterday was a real full circle moment. What full circle moments have you experienced? Feel free to leave me a comment.
