Pyramids Half Marathon: epic backdrop for bucket list race
The marathon owes its name to the legend of a Greek herald who, in 490 BC, carried the news of the victory over the Persians from Marathon to Athens, where he collapsed and died. The Pyramids of Giza were built around 2,000 years earlier and are the only surviving wonder of the ancient world. Yesterday, they provided the backdrop for a half marathon, and I was lucky enough to be part of this extraordinary race.
The pyramids always in view
What an impressive atmosphere. Around 7,000 runners set out on a thoroughly challenging course. Mostly asphalt, an undulating profile, and a few spectators along the route, some of them on camels. No matter where you were, the pyramids were always present. Sometimes in front of you, sometimes beside you, sometimes behind you. This panorama is difficult to put into words. It is simply impressive.
The external conditions were also perfect. At the start, the temperature was a pleasant 12 degrees Celsius. This is one of the reasons why the race, now in its sixth year, always takes place in December.
Minor complications before the start
Time played a secondary role in this race. For one thing, I had contracted a mild eye infection beforehand, which meant I only made my final decision to start at the last minute. Almost more serious was the rear-end collision involving my Uber driver on the highway, who was supposed to take me to the race number distribution point. Suddenly, I was stranded in the middle of the desert without a car or internet. In the end, though, everything turned out fine.
A real bucket list race
The Pyramid Half Marathon is a very special event. I am very grateful for this experience. The race was an epic experience and had been on my bucket list for a long time. It feels great to be able to tick it off.
It’s one of those races where the athletic value takes a back seat. What counts is the experience and adventure. That’s exactly why I’m also attracted to other extraordinary runs such as the Middle-earth Halfling Half Marathon in New Zealand or the Taj Mahal Half Marathon in India.
