Sports business insights at FC Bayern Basketball
Yesterday, as part of the Sportsbusiness.at Travel Club, I once again had the privilege of hosting a high-profile sports business event. At the invitation of Interwetten, I accompanied an exclusive behind-the-scenes event focusing on FC Bayern Munich Basketball, which combined top athletic performance with strategic insights. The destination of our visit was the SAP Garden in Munich, the new home of the DEL club Red Bull Munich, where FC Bayern Munich’s basketball team also plays selected home games.
An arena with charisma
The SAP Garden is one of the most modern multifunctional sports arenas in Europe. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated in May 2023, and today the arena can accommodate around 11,500 spectators. Located in the heart of the Olympic Park, it is home to two top clubs from completely different sports, both of which are successful nationally and internationally. A detailed stadium tour kicked off our Travel Club event and impressively conveyed how consistently the focus here is on fan experience, technology, and versatility.

Background discussion with sports business insiders
Afterwards, I had the pleasure of welcoming two proven business insiders to a very informative discussion. Julian Zott, Head of Marketing & Brand Management, was there on behalf of the Interwetten Group as the initiator of the event. On the host side, Sebastian Ferschl, Head of Business Strategy at FC Bayern Basketball, provided fascinating insights into the club’s strategic direction.
Topics included marketing in basketball, international competitiveness, and targeted synergies with FC Bayern’s soccer division. It was particularly exciting to see how strongly sporting identity, economic strategy, and entertainment interact.

EuroLeague evening as the perfect finale
The crowning finale was a visit to the EuroLeague game between FC Bayern Munich and Panathinaikos Athens. In front of a sold-out crowd, the seven-time German champions pulled off a surprise victory over the favored seven-time EuroLeague winners from Greece. After trailing narrowly at halftime, FC Bayern put in an impressive performance in the second half and deservedly won 85-78. The atmosphere in the arena was electric, fueled by the passionate support of the fans.

Sports trips that leave you wanting more
The third Sportsbusiness.at Travel Club trip was once again well worth the journey. After the Ski World Championships in Saalbach and the Generali Open in Kitzbühel, the trip to FC Bayern Basketball was the next highlight. Many thanks to the entire team at Spotsbusiness.at and Interwetten for making this experience possible. I took away many exciting insights from the conversations and was still impressed the next day by the team spirit with which FC Bayern achieved this success.
