Business rituals: 6 reasons why they help your team to advance

Have you ever wondered why some teams constantly reach new heights while others fall short of expectations despite their great potential? One key to this could be the often overlooked rituals in everyday business life. These seemingly simple habits involve a transformative power that can strengthen the foundation of any successful team.

Rituals at work are ubiquitous in the business world. But what is the purpose behind them and how do they leverage team performance? As a keynote speaker and especially as an event host, I have experienced the value of rituals. The ceremonial character of an award ceremony or the presentation of the fighters of a boxing gala, which follows a very specific pattern, give a very special touch to the events. Such examples show how rituals can highlight and honor employee engagement and achievement. However, work rituals can be used not only at prominent events, but also in the normal course of business to strengthen teams and their performance.

Rituals, routines and habits: what are the differences?

Rituals and habits are not the same. They take place at different levels of consciousness. But what exactly are the differences?

Rituals

Rituals are consciously designed, regular actions. Rituals are often found in a religious context, but they also make emotional connection, meaningfulness and appreciation tangible in a team in regular workplace settings. They transform employees into enthusiastic fans and create those magical moments that bind people to the company in the long term.

Routines and habits

Routines and habits, on the other hand, are actions that tend to be unconscious and have become ingrained. Routines impart meaning to business processes, they have been developed in a function-oriented way. Such activities make workflows more efficient. Habits are automatic processes that are no longer questioned.

Why rituals are important in business: 6 key reasons

Work rituals have a special power. They create strong, emotionally connecting moments, are an expression of an authentic corporate culture and thus ensure that employees are less likely to leave a company. This creates an environment in which employees feel perceived, valued or emotionally connected. Rituals work precisely at this point because they create three essential binding factors that, among other things, greatly reduce the number of resignations:

1. Structure and reliability

Rituals are anchor points in the business world. They serve to define the course of certain activities or decision-making processes. Because they recur regularly, they provide stability and security.

2. Strengthening the sense of unity

Rituals such as celebrating successes together, regularly recognizing achievements and sharing experiences encourage employees to feel a strong emotional connection to the company and their colleagues. This makes them feel not just like a “worker”, but an important part of a community. The resulting emotional bond also leads to a higher intrinsic motivation and employees are less likely to quit.

3. More efficiency and productivity

Appreciative and meaningful workplace rituals reduce friction because employees know that their achievements are recognized. Celebrating successes alone makes processes and workflows run more smoothly and efficiently.

4. Better communication

Even if the boundaries between both the ritual and the routine become blurred here, activities such as regular meetings or even the morning chat at the coffee machine lead to improved communication and increase mutual appreciation.

5. Rituals foster trust

Targeted rituals that focus on personal appreciation not only make employees feel recognized and individually noticed. Personal greetings, authentic recognition from managers or individual onboarding also lead to employees developing a strong sense of trust in their managers which does positively impact company culture. This increases their loyalty on the one hand and their willingness to perform on the other.

6. Rituals help in dealing with change

Rituals create meaning and build trust. This makes it easier to emotionally engage employees during change processes and to implement necessary changes more easily.

Rituals of the successful: How they help top athletes

As you know, I love sports because it can serve as a blueprint for the corporate world in many ways. There are classic rituals in sports, such as playing the national anthems before international matches, which increases identification and the sense of unity. Medal ceremonies are an expression of appreciation for the winners. Judoka bow to the audience, referee and opponent to express their respect. But there are also very special rituals that have made very successful athletes very well known.

The All Blacks, the national rugby team of New Zealand, have a winning record of over 75%. This makes them the most successful national team in the world across all sports. Their trademark is the Haka, a Maori ritual dance performed before every game to motivate themselves and instill respect in their opponents.

Well-known rituals: examples from the business world

In my work with a wide range of companies, I have come across a number of successful rituals, mainly group rituals. Some examples are particularly impressive and companies reap huge benefits from them.

John Deere: a welcoming culture for new employees

John Deere is a prime example of how the workplace can be perfectly prepared for new employees even before their first day. Personal welcome signs, small gifts at the workplace and an experienced colleague to guide the newcomer through their first day. This immediately creates an emotional bond, a real sense of belonging and appreciation from day one.

Ritz Carlton: The “Daily Line-Up” as a ritual of recognition

The so-called “Daily Line-Up” at the Ritz Carlton is a short, joint meeting in which successes are shared and employees who have achieved something special are highlighted. The group ritual is practiced every day and is an extremely successful example among workplace rituals. The recognition associated with the ritual for small and large successes is a powerful regular group bonding activity. A similar ritual is also anchored in the corporate culture at HubSpot. The so-called “Champagne Moment”, in which the team celebrates every new customer together, creates regular moments of pride, community, emotional connection, simply moments with more meaning.

Apple: The applause for the store opening or for the product launch

When Apple opens a new store, all employees stand at the entrance, clap and greet each incoming customer personally and warmly. The same happens with large product releases or with the launch of new products. Then the employees stand in front of the stores and applaud the first buyers enthusiastically. Both rituals include the customers into the team spirit. They also give the moment more meaning, i.e. making the customers feel special and strengthen their emotional connection to the brand.

LEGO: Play Day

A particularly cool business ritual is the regularly recurring Play Day that LEGO organizes for its employees. Employees are encouraged to be creative with LEGO bricks, try out new ideas and experience the core value of play up close. This increases emotional attachment to the brand, promotes creativity, team spirit and innovation.

Zappos: The “Graduation Ceremony”

After completing several weeks of intensive training, new employees at Zappos celebrate their personal “graduation ceremony” together with their group members. This includes gifts, personal recognition, and a symbolic introduction to the corporate culture. This group ritual is particularly effective in strengthening a sense of belonging and emotional connection to the company. It also promotes a corporate culture based on community, appreciation, and motivation.

How can you create workplace rituals?

When applying or implementing rituals, managers must keep several aspects in mind: appreciation, meaningfulness, the impact on the team and the effect on individuals. This leads to three types of rituals that have proven successful in my experience.

Eine Gruppe von Kollegen, die einen Erfolg beklatschen und einen Meilenstein feiern, mit einem Lächeln und Anerkennung in einer Büroumgebung.

What rituals can you introduce?

Individual appreciation rituals from the manager: Rituals that are not standardized but tailored to individual employees are particularly effective. One example of this could be handwritten thank-you letters that managers spontaneously send to employees when they have done something special. Spontaneity and authenticity are crucial characteristics that make the emotional impact of such an individual, personal ritual particularly strong. It shows how meaningful employees are judged.

Meaningful rituals for identification and employee retention: Examples of such rituals are daily stand-ups where successes are shared, or weekly team rituals where team members can present themselves in turn. In this way, a company communicates the values it lives by and why the contribution of each individual is important and makes sense. However, regular meetings without clear objectives that are held only out of habit are a bad example of meaningful rituals. Such meetings either need to be reorganized or eliminated. Rituals such as the classic fruit basket have no connection to the team and its activities and are perceived as unloving (except in companies whose business is healthy nutrition).

Teamgeist und Zusammenhalt in der Gemeinschaft. Helfende Hände

Belonging rituals that promote team building: Onboarding rituals, for example, can be mentioned in this context. Here, the “initiation ritual” at Zappos certainly stands out. However, induction into the team can also be shaped by welcome meetings, where everyone introduces themselves and warmly welcomes the new colleague. It is also helpful to appoint a sponsor or mentor who, as an experienced colleague, will accompany the new employee for several weeks and introduce them to existing company rituals. However, team building rituals can also be formed through special events that recur at regular intervals. But be careful: especially in a time when work-life balance and flexibility are emphasized, group rituals abound such as obligatory “after-work” events often have a rather demotivating effect. It makes more sense to integrate team rituals into the working day or to make them voluntary. In the latter case, employees can decide for themselves whether and how they want to participate.

Role of managers

Group rituals create a sense for values and are an important part of corporate culture. They can be used to strengthen relationships within teams and provide orientation. Managers have a special responsibility to use rituals sensibly, to live them seriously and thus to meet the challenges of the modern working world. Especially with regard to new employees to be integrated, rituals can be used in a targeted manner because they help them to find their way around emotionally and professionally more quickly.

Workplace rituals: a value not to be underestimated

Business administration is convinced that company rituals help to create meaning, to identify with the company, to show appreciation for colleagues and thus strengthen the emotional bond between employees and the company. They have a positive effect on the working atmosphere, team spirit, productivity and, last but not least, directly counteract resignations because employees become fans of their employer. In my keynote speeches, I go into this and other topics in more depth. You are welcome to book me as a keynote speaker to talk about rituals, motivation and team building at your company.
